Thomas Friedman argues that America is all about center-based politics, that
the extreme left and extreme right don’t matter. This is along the lines of
“can’t we all just get along?” If politicians are centrist, they obviously will
be able to compromise easier than those at the extremes. But is this optimal?
If our scale of politicians runs from those with liberty being the highest
order to those where government is the solution to all problems, then we can
look at some extremes to see what we learn. Here, liberty is the freedom to do
what one wants as long as that action does not impact the liberty of someone
else.
